History and Mission

Since 1977, Assistance aux femmes de Montréal has been fulfilling its mission by providing shelter which is confidential and free of charge to women from all cultural communities who are victims of domestic violence and their children.

We provide counselling and support as well as follow-up services for each resident. Thanks to our telephone support services and outreach program, we also provide assistance to women who do not require a shelter.

We use a feminist approach designed to re-empower women and restore their self-confidence. Our objective is to oppose domestic violence and diminish its impact on women and children. Our organisation takes part in activities designed to bring about social change with respect to the issue of domestic violence. We are also members of the “Regroupement des maisons pour femmes victimes de violence conjugale” (RMFVVC), an association of shelters for women who are victims of domestic violence.

Assistance aux femmes de Montréal receives funding from the Québec government department for health and social services, the federal government’s “Canada Summer Jobs” program, and donors of our annual fundraising campaign.
